Why is it so hard to meet other moms?

Having my first child felt like I should be inducted into a “New Moms Club". This club is international and has many chapters. But, it’s not the kind of club you can nudge your buddy into joining with you (it’s tempting, but don’t do this!). There are billions of people in this world, so there has to be billions of mothers, right? So then why did it seem like I was in a club for one?

Why is it so hard to meet other moms?

Before I became a mom, I seemed to only know two kinds of people: those without kids and those with teenagers. I take that back, I did have one friend with young children… it’s just that we didn’t really have anything in common after she had kids.


So, we know why we lose some friends after motherhood, but how do we make new mommy friends? I’ve always been a little shy anyway. Every attempt to make a mommy friend felt like the first day at a new school. What should I wear to story-time at the library? If I wear too much makeup will I seem like I’m trying too hard? Maybe...


You know that exercise is good for you. It’s good for you mood. It’s good for your heart. It’s good for your waistline. Did you know that it’s good for your breasts too?

Exercise lowers levels of estrogen in your body, which, in turn, reduces your risk for breast cancer. According to a U.S. News & World Report from 2012, women who exercise 2 hours a day, 5 days per week are 30% less likely to develop breast cancer than sedentary women. If you don’t think you can fit all that exercise into your busy mom schedule, note that women who did any exercise at all had a 6% lower risk of breast cancer. That’s not bad!

Make it a family thing. One study showed that girls as young as 12 can begin decreasing their risk for breast cancer by increasing their activity levels. There is no reason you have to wait until the age of 12 to get your kids involved in exercise with you though! Exercising with your children is emotionally and physically rewarding. It can be something as simple as taking a walk in the park with your child. Of course, if you’ve got stroller-aged...


Summer is almost here and that means our classes are held in warmer temperatures which can sometimes be uncomfortable for moms and our little ones. Here are some helpful tips to keep everyone nice and comfy during our FIT4MOM classes.

  1. Hot and Cold Gel packs: A frozen hot and cold gel pack wrapped in a dish towel makes a wonderful climate control backrest for your little one. It’s squishy so it is not uncomfortable to lean against and it will keep baby nice and cool without being too cold. You can find these at most pharmacies and stores like Target. They even come with their own comfort sleeve and cost about $4.
  2. Frozen water bottle: Fill a water bottle ¾ of the way and then freeze it while it is partially on its side. Make sure it is on an angle and that the cap end is not totally covered with water. Right before class, fill the remaining space with cold tap water. Your water will remain cold for the duration of class.

Did you know that June is national safety month? Let's keep you and your baby safe by sharing some jogging stroller safety tips.

- If your stroller has a swivel wheel, you must lock it forward during any exercise such as power walking, jogging, hiking or rough terrain. This provides greater stability for your stroller and helps prevent the possibility of tipping over.

- Use of a car seat adapter is encouraged for babies from 0 - 8 months old. Children develop at different rates. Most babies don't have the neck strength for jogging motion until 8 months. You can consult with your pediatrician.

- Make sure to use the stroller's wrist strap while doing any type of exercise. Also, lock the parking brake any time the stroller is stopped. The strap provides added security by keeping the stroller near you during your routine, while the brake assists you at rest.

- Always securely buckle your baby in the stroller. You wouldn't let your baby go without a seat belt in the car and you shouldn't in the stroller. Even if your baby doesn't have the strength to get out...


What the heck am I talking about? Quite simply, this is about how you physically move through your world as a mom. Over the years I have drafted a more clinical look at "mommy movement patterns"...let me know if this rings true for you:

"Motherhood happens asymmetrically, with ever increasing, dispersed, non-compliant load (aka. BABY/CHILD)"

Your role as a mom is very physical and that lovely child, whom you care for non-stop, just gets bigger every day. Everything about motherhood can potentially pull you out of good posture or alignment, causing you muscle fatigue and/or pain. All of our FIT4MOM instructors are specially trained to develop class formats which address this challenge you face all day, however, with some insight and intention into your world, you can help reverse this forward pull too! Here are some TIPS:

  • Place your shoulder blades into your back pockets - This is a general reminder to draw your shoulders back and down (like you are placing them into the back pockets of your jeans) throughout your day.

8 weeks! We have 8 weeks until summer! And while I am not one to promote dieting or place too much weight on how you look in a bikini, I do want you to enjoy your summer. I want you out there playing with your kids. I want you in the pool, on the beach and on the lake enjoying your family. I want you comfortable in your skin so you don't feel the need to hide behind sundresses or beach towels. Your body is meant to be enjoyed.

Each Wednesday, I will post a new Summer Body Countdown assignment. The trick is to commit! Commit to trying something new and creating new habits. I was thinking the other day when making dinner how there must be a recipe for a happy life. We are always thinking that we need more of something. More money or more time or more things. But more doesn't always make a recipe better. More sugar doesn't make your cake better. More flour doesn't make your bread better. You also can't make the bread rise if you don't have the yeast. A recipe needs just the right amount.

What ingredients should be in your daily life? Is there something missing in your recipe? An ingredient like rest, fun or adventure?

Every recipe is different. Here is my recipe for a happy life..


2 cups love

1 cup of friendship

1/2 cup of positivity

A generous handful of health

A pinch of patience

Add a dash of kindness, adventure and laughter.

Mix together daily and serve with a warm side of compassion and respect.

Welcome to April...this new month brings a new FIT4MOM challenge. April is all about those abs with a "Crunch Fest".


  • As you come up into your crunch, relax your face and neck. Keep your chin off your chest.
  • Exhale on the upwards phase of the movement as your drawn your rib cage towards your hip bones.
  • Finally, think of pulling your belly button towards your spine as you come up and keep a low-level core contraction as your descend out of the crunch.

Get crunching - by month's end you will feel and see the difference in your core strength.

Mornings can be rough, especially if you are a mom to school aged children. There are tantrums about getting out of bed and getting dressed. There is chaos over what to eat for breakfast or pack for lunch. And there is never enough time before you are rushing out the door. There is no easing into the day.

Something has to give. And in this case, it's your morning routine. Many successful people credit their morning routine to their results. People like Benjamin Franklin, Barack Obama, Steve Jobs and Anthony Robbins have shared how their morning rituals set them up for success in the day. These famous men having nothing on you mama. •In your own words, what is it that you do for a living and how did you get into this line of work?

I teach fitness classes to moms! More specifically, I own a Fit4Mom franchise and I teach Stroller Strides classes to moms with stroller aged children. I also teach Body Back classes to moms of any age. As a new mom, I was searching for a way to become more fit and healthy so I could have an active role in my children’s lives. I discovered Fit4Mom (formerly named Stroller Strides) and knew I had to bring it to Little Rock.

Yesterday, local schools held early dismissal for a snow storm which wouldn’t arrive for a few hours, leaving many people scratching their heads. As I picked up my kids, I was asked by a local news station to give my reaction. Ever the voice of reason, I said “we have to think about the safety of the children who live in rural areas.” In Arkansas, we simply don’t have the resources to clear our roads when winter weather strikes.

This was ever apparent as later in the evening, when snow was falling heavily over our state, I received a text from a friend: “Just letting you know I may or may not be there tmrw… I was on my way back to LR and had to pull over in Lamar…Helms and I may be sleeping in the car tonight.”

Helms is her two year old. If she wasn’t planning to help me with an event, I may have not known she was stuck.

Never mind that, I set out to see if I could help.

Meet Our New Fit4Mom Team Member

We are SO EXCITED to announce our newest instructor, Ariel Harper! Ariel and her son, Helms, joined Stroller Strides last summer and we knew right away that she would make an amazing instructor. She studied and became a certified group fitness instructor through AFAA before specializing in prenatal and postnatal fitness through Fit4Mom. Ariel has been working hard and has created some very challenging classes. Read on to learn more about Ariel and her family and then join her during our M/W/F 9:00 am classes. She's flying solo beginning Monday, January 13th.

With 2013 quickly coming to a close, I find myself reflecting on twelve months of change. So many wonderful things changed within my personal life, but today I'm going to focus on the changes within my business. In 2013, our franchise changed its name from Stroller Strides to Fit4Mom. This sweeping change has opened up many opportunities for moms to grow their businesses! With a name like Stroller Strides, it implies that we lead classes only for moms with stroller aged children, when in fact we were also offering Fit4Baby prenatal classes, LEAN nutrition classes and Body Back classes for moms of any age. Fit4Mom really encompasses all that we are: We offer fitness programs for all stages of motherhood!

2013 also saw the addition of automated registration and billing within one system, freeing up valuable time for other aspects of owning a business, like marketing and building relationships within the community. This year, I have had the opportunity to lead both morning and evening Stroller Strides classes. I've met some amazing moms along the way! I'm touched every day that the women in class make getting fit and healthy a priority. Being a new mom is tough; THANK YOU for sharing your precious time with me!


I’ve had the opportunity to train some AMAZING women over this past year. I’ve watched women lose inches while gaining confidence, I’ve helped them become stronger and more lean. I’ve been touched by their dedication to their health and wellness. It’s not just a workout, it’s a way of life, a way of living life to the fullest.

I look forward to 2014 with anticipation, thinking of the lives I’ll help change.
